Outfit Indesiciveness:

I introduced it to my team by asking, “Does anyone else take too long on their outfit for the day?” Everyone said yes. We then took this opportunity to look into it further.

Fast Fashion; Slow Burn:

The fast fashion industry alone consumes about 700 gallons of water to produce a single cotton shirt and 2,000 gallons for a pair of jeans.

Seattle Fashion:

In Seattle, more and more people are connecting through fashion experiences such as the Pioneer Square Art Walk, the Fremont Sunday Market, and more.

research question: What challenges do people in fashion experience in Seattle?

j, 23

Q: “ has social media affected the way you approach fashion in any way?”

A: “I feel like I really take pictures of, like, my best outfits, because the pressure of getting together to post on Instagram, or getting together.”

k, 20

Q: “Do you like shopping for second hand clothing?

A: “Yes, for sure, because… One, it's good on my pockets, um, and… Two… I think the idea of sustainability has always been important to me.

v, 21

Q: “has resale culture affected the way you shop?”

A: “I don't know if people are lying or not… like, are you lying that it's vintage, or did you just get this off, like… Temu, and then you said it's vintage, and you racked it up $30.

(01)

All participants mentioned gaining inspiration from social media apps, such as Pinterest, Instagram, etc.

(02)

Outfit indecisiveness was something that affected 90% of our participants.

(03)

Secondhand shopping is widely preferred than contributing to fast fashion.

(04)

Self expression was one of the main reasons that our participants said their style grows from.

key insights (01 - 04):

personas

Bethany

Growing up, she was taught that thrifting was a negative. Ever since, she’s tried avoiding it, but as she got older, vintage fashion is something she’s adored. As an attempt to get more into vintage fashion, she tries to connect with others and build a community through fashion, and wants to explore the world of secondhand shopping.

Kevin

Whenever Kevin looks at his closet, he cannot form the outfit he is envisioning. He looks through Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration but they have a lot of clothing pieces he doesn’t. He wants to start creating his own clothing so he can have unique pieces that fit him perfectly.

...design to support Seattleites interested in fashion by fostering a sustainable fashion community?

(01: DEPOP)

Well known as the app for selling secondhand clothing, but its main pain point is the surge of unregulated pricing on secondhand goods.

(02: PINTEREST)

The main source of inspiration in our interviews, however, it does not encourage community building despite the app having a messaging feature.

(03: REDDIT)

Allows those to find and engage with any community they’re interested in joining, but forums can be broad, not allowing for local community building.

(04: IN-STORE THRIFTING)

Preferred by the majority during our research phase, but with the rise of catered vintage thrift shops, prices also rise.

busy interface:

“looks cluttered but it might be because the panels are all together”

extensive onboarding data entry:

“It would be tiring to add all of my clothing to use it right.”

“Imagine you just download it and how long it would take to upload all of your stuff.””

Transparency of data collection and use:

“...also probably how they are collecting my information if it tracks posts I like and clothes I have”

“...I don’t know how its gonna curate stuff for you, does it take from the for you page or from trends”

Nice fit, XXX.

navigation needed to be cohesive:

Users had a hard time navigating through all flows, but thought the adding to the closet flow felt like a tutorial and more guiding.

prototype functionality:

Users mentioned how parts of the app not working made them confused on how the app works, specifically not being able to tap into other listings.

user interface:

Users thought making the prototype a little more mid-fidelity (like scrolling and tapping into more screens) would help them understand CTRLCLOSET to its fullest.

TO KEEP YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR CLOSET UPDATED, CTRLCLOSET WILL LET YOU KNOW TO UPLOAD YOUR OUTFIT OF THE DAY SO IT CAN LOG WHAT YOU’VE WORN USING IT’S GOOGLE LENS LIKE SCANNER AND MATCHING IT TO PIECES YOU’VE UPLOADED (BUT TO ALSO SHOW OFF YOUR OUTFIT TO YOUR FRIENDS.)

CTRLCLOSET LETS YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVENT WORN SOMETHING IN A WHILE BASED ON YOUR OOTDS.

IT THEN SUGGESTS TO GIVE IT A SECOND LIFE BY TRADING IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

FASHION IS ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY, SO CONNECT WITH OTHERS BY MESSAGING THROUGH CTRLCLOSET TO COMPLIMENT THEIR OUTFIT OF THE DAY. CAN ALSO BE USED TO TALK ABOUT TRADING AN OUTFIT.
